Frequently Asked Questions

How does Toastmasters work?

Toastmasters is a non-profit organisation with the aim of giving members the chance to speak in front of an audience about anything they wish, so they can improve their public speaking. After their speech, members will be given a constructive evaluation by an advanced member so they can improve and grow within the club.

Can anyone go to a Toastmasters meeting?

Yes anyone can attend. Toastmasters is a public, not-for-profit organisation. Just come along to any of our meetings as a guest to see what our club is all about. All we ask is that guests (and members) pay a €5 entry fee at each meeting to help cover the cost of the room. However a guest’s first meeting is free!

Do I have to speak at the meeting?

Absolutely not! Guests (or members) are never pressured to speak so there is no fear that you will be put on the spot. However, if you feel like speaking, there will be a chance to do so during the first part of the meeting in the table topics session.

When are meetings?

Our meetings are held at 8.00pm (SHARP) on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at the Lakeside Hotel (Killaloe/Ballina), from the beginning of September to the end of May/beginning of June. During the summer we try to meet for a social outing also.

What do you get out out of Toastmasters?

Whether you have a presentation coming up in work, need more confidence in interviews, a wedding speech to prepare or you just want to improve your general public speaking for your own self-confidence Toastmasters can help you achieve your goal! Toastmasters also helps you learn how to preside over a meeting and run it effectively gaining important leadership skills.

Can I join Toastmasters?

Yes you can and we welcome all new members as it helps to make our club better for everyone. Before you join it is always a good idea to attend one of our meetings as a guest and see how the meeting takes place first hand. During the meeting you can talk to some of our current members, hear their experiences of Toastmasters and how they have found being member of our club. The yearly membership is currently €80 and this can be paid in two instalments - in Sept and Jan. This fee includes your Toastmasters Competent Communicator and Leadership manuals which will guide you in your Toastmasters journey and are excellent resources to have.
